I love Goji Berries! They are one of my favourite additions to a trail mix. Considered both a fruit and an herb, goji berries grow in some of the most extreme and harsh climates. It has become very popular and known as a “superfood” over the last few years due to its highly nutritive and antioxidant properties. Try my Goji Berry Spice Latte!

1. Goji berries can protects your eyes: Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world, and half of those that have it don’t even know it. It is the increase in intraocular pressure that is the major cause of blindness because some of the cells necessary for vision slowly degenerate and die. Studies have shown that goji berry helps the retinal ganglion cells in the retina (these cells are needed for vision) to survive longer despite the increase in intraocular pressure and prevents vascular damages as well. Note: Technically Goji Berries are a nightshade which contain glycoalkaloids. These are natural chemicals that the plants produce to protect themselves. These compounds which are found throughout the plant, but the concentrations are higher in the leaves, flowers and unripe fruits.
Though many people do perfectly well and even thrive on certain nightshade plants, they are contra-indicated for people that react to even a small amount of glycoalkaloids. Glycoalkaloids can cause inflammation and arthritic symptoms in some people. You will need to test goji berries for yourself to see if you react in an adverse way.
