The Health Benefits Of Oil Pulling

Oil Pulling is an ancient yogic practice, recorded 1,500 years ago in the early Ayurvedic text, Charaka Samhita. Oil Pulling is a way to clean your gums and teeth by rinsing your mouth with oil.

Simply swish 1 tbsp of sesame or coconut oil around your mouth, pushing it between your teeth for 10 to 15 minutes, and then spitting it out.

Don’t swallow the oil, because it now contains all the microbes, toxins and mucous it collected in your mouth!

Oil Pulling therapy has been shown to strengthen teeth, gums and jaw, and can prevent bad breath, bleeding gums, dry throat, cracked lips and tooth decay (by killing the streptococcus bacteria that causes cavities).

One of the most surprising benefits of Oil Pulling is tooth whitening. The therapeutic oil works as a solvent, lifting the stains of coffee, wine and tea off your pearly whites.*

Coconut oil is a fantastic oil to use for this technique as it is very antimicrobial and it's great for killing the yeast and bacteria that cause bad breath.

How to perform Coconut Oil Pulling

  1. Oil Pull first thing in the morning, right after you get out of bed — before you brush your teeth or drink anything.
  2. Gently swish 1–2 tbsp of coconut oil in your mouth and between your teeth for 10–20 minutes, making sure that you don’t swallow any of the oil. (Do this gently so you don’t exhaust your jaw and cheeks!)
  3. Spit out the oil in the trash, not the sink, (using the sink will clog up your plumbing… ask me how I know), and immediately rinse your mouth out with warm water. Use salt water, if desired, for additional antimicrobial benefits.
  4. Brush your teeth normally, and voila, easy as that!
  5. For best results, Oil Pull 3-4 times every week.
